XT2

The DJI FLIR Zenmuse XT2 thermal camera is an aerial unit that does more than sense and record heat, denoting its different levels. The XT2 336x256 30Hz 13mm camera also records finely detailed, ultra-high definition 4K video. To capture thermal images and visual 4K with an XT2, there’s no need to change cameras on the drone you’re using. There’s not even a need to change lenses.

It’s all here: The XT2 has separate lenses and sensors to shoot both kinds of video. What’s more, it can display both types of video simultaneously, and it lets the user choose from several ways to display the data. Simultaneous display makes interpretation of the data—and decision-making based on that information—faster because data interpretation is easier than ever.

First responders—firefighters, police, search-and-rescue teams—can use this level of technology to great effect. Prison guards and security crews can benefit, too. So can engineers and inspectors of power lines, high-tension towers, buildings and bridges.

This camera is one of several DJI FLIR Zenmuse XT2 versions available from Drone Nerds.

DJI FLIR Zenmuse XT2 Thermal Camera – 336x256 30 Hz 13mm features:

  • 336x256 resolution
  • 30Hz frame rate
  • 13mm wide-angle focal length
  • Resistance to light rain
  • Thermal imaging
  • 4K video
  • 12MP stills

  • Shake-free video from a stabilizing 3-axis motorized gimbal
  • Interchangeability with other cameras on compatible drones

XT2 Captures More Data

The XT2 captures more data because it can record through two separate lenses and processors simultaneously. That means you can record 4K visual video and thermal images on one flight. One flight instead of two saves time and reduces costs. Accuracy improves because the two sets of data share the same angle, view, light and time.

XT2 Displays More Data

The XT2 displays more data at any given time. That makes interpretation of data easier, better understood and faster. For instance, visual 4K video and thermal imagery can be displayed with included picture-in-picture capability. XT2 goes even further, allowing visual and thermal data to be displayed over top each other. That quickens data interpretation and onsite decision-making.

The XT2 does more than sense and record heat. Onscreen readouts report temperatures. A broad color palette differentiates one temperature range from another, and the colors are adjustable to make readings easier and faster. Isotherms also can be displayed onscreen.

Interpreting Data

To help interpret the high level of data collected by the XT2, an onboard machine intelligence suite is included. Onsite interpretation of data becomes possible, without the need to transfer data to another site or a computer. Qualified onsite personnel are empowered to make timely decisions based on their findings—invaluable in critical situations.

Tracking Heat Sources

The DJI Zenmuse XT2 helps the operator focus on a heat source. It identifies the hottest point seen, and the operator can use Temp Alarm to set parameters and receive notification of instances when the temperature strays beyond the range. To check on a real-time temperature, just tap on any point on the screen and XT2 delivers a reading.

Tracking Suspects

For law enforcement, the XT2 helps with night surveillance. It can capture nighttime thermal images of suspects or subjects. It also can follow them, locking onto a suspect if the command is given.  Because it also records in 4K visual video, it can be used in daytime surveillance as well.

Saving Firefighters’ Lives

An XT2 protects firefighters from the moment it’s on the scene. Before a firefighter sets foot on the roof of a burning building, the XT2 becomes his eyes—and sees what he can’t. A drone-mounted XT2 hovers safely above the fire, identifying heat sources that are easily interpreted as fire inside a wall or roof. That helps firefighters determine where and how to attack the blaze and where to vent the roof. No longer can one step in the wrong area of a roof cause a firefighter to crash through, causing injuries that can prove fatal.

Thermal sensing also enables firefighters to train water on hotspots once the fire is under control. That results in more complete extinguishing of the fire and lessens the likelihood that firefighters and equipment will have to be summoned back to the scene due to flareups.

The XT2’s ability to record 4K video as well as thermal images can contribute to training, the gathering of evidence and public relations.

Locating Survivors

When disaster strikes—an explosion, a building or bridge collapse, an earthquake, a devastating tornado, a train derailment, an avalanche—minutes saved can mean lives saved. The XT2 mounted on a drone can scan debris for sources of heat faster than a team with dogs can canvass the site. Survivors under the rubble are the likely sources of heat.

Benefiting Prison, Security Personnel

Which way did he go? An escapee depending on the camouflage of dense brush or woods is no match for a drone-mounted XT2 camera, nor is a burglar attempting to hide in a warehouse or freight yard. The thermal sensor on a Zenmuse XT2 will sense the heat given off by a body. That lets prison guards send tracking dogs and officers in the right direction. And it allows security personnel to determine if an alarm-triggering intruder is a person, which may mean a dangerous armed confrontation, or merely a stray animal.

The drone-mounted camera also covers expansive territory—a perimeter fence, parking lot or campus—in far less time than could be covered on foot or even in a car. With its dual cameras, and XT2 gathers infrared thermal readings and visual 4K or still photos to build evidence.
